Phil Alder

Phil Alder

Gardens, Flowers, Foliage, Water and Light.

Born in 1951. Phil has followed a career in the Arts and as a practicing artist in west Wales. Phil is current Chair of King Street Gallery and is represented in several public collections, private and corporate collections.

Uses mixed colours, rhythm and shallow depths. Accuracy in colour is very important in particular to the studio work.

The studio paintings are normally small to medium, that is, around 30cms – 100cms and painted mainly in oils but also acrylics or oil over acrylic.

In contrast he also enjoys working with watercolour. The studio paintings and the more ‘abstract’ watercolours seek to pin down an ‘inner image’, the equivalent of a, usually particular, experience and visually recreating it.

Watercolour is also used in drawing form observation and to develop a calligraphy of marks, textures and rhythms. To do so local colour is used and the brush held in an ‘eastern manner’.

Phil tends to work through themes and ideas over ten to fifteen year cycles, currently concentrating on the themes of gardens and movement.

He would welcome site specific commissions and would do so in a four stage commissioning process.
