Project GRAVITY

Three artists and two dancers explore movement and the force of gravity

with some new works at Kings Street Gallery, Carmarthen.

Elizabeth Tomos and Stephanie Lowder have been transforming spaces

using dance as a medium for mark making. ‘Drawing Breath’ records the trajectory

of dancers across the floor. The work seeks to capture the dynamics and

ephemeral qualities of a ballet performance, in a piece exploring movement, space

and memory. The dancers will create, change, shift and even obliterate marks made

whilst simultaneously mapping their own movements throughout the performance.

In the film shown two dances are performed; the first choreographed and performed

by Daisuke Miura and Lauren Poulton (Ballet Cymru Dancers) and the second

choreographed by Ballet Cymru artistic director Darius James and performed by

Lauren Poulton and Richard Read. This piece has been reworked specially for the

Carmarthen show using local dancer Lauren Heckler.

Victoria Jones has made a film creating a physical language for the ground

geography of Carmarthen. Her film, ‘Orbiting Carmarthen’ is a ‘performed map’

of Carmarthen town centre. She has collaborated with Elizabeth Tomos (performer)

to create a set of foot gestures which focus our attention on the mundane and

repetitive landscape of urban Carmarthen. Jones is exploring how people emotionally

attach with place, and hopes this piece is a catalyst for locals to reappraise somewhere

they are connected and familiar with.

Many thanks to:

Kings Street Gallery who continue to provide a space for stimulating, provocative and vital works.

Ballet Cymru for facilitating and supporting this project.

Performers: Lauren Poulton, Daisuke Miura, Richard Read (Ballet Cymru) and to Lauren Heckler,

our local performer.
