PHIL ALDER
Phillip Alder was born in 1951 in London. He studied economics and fine and applied art at Hull College of Education from 1970 to 1973 where he mixed with a group of young, mainly figurative artists, but was largely mentored by Mike Chiltern associated with the 'Leicester School' or 'Inner Imagists'. Phil Alder later studied art history with the Open University.
He moved to Carmarthen in 1975 seeking to exorcise what he had learnt in Hull: joining the lively arts scene associated with Dyfed College of Art and the Artists and Designers in Wales Organisation and writing about art for the welsh arts press.
He taught part time at Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art from 1997 until 1988 when he became Dyfed County Council Arts Officer. He began to show less frequently and ceased being represented by Attic Gallery, West Wales Arts Centre and Arts for Offices. Since 1996 he has been Carmarthenshire County Council Arts Manager.
His work has always been inspired by a reverence for nature, its revelations and our place in its order. In her essay on the artist, 'Spirit of Place' published 1987, Ann Dorsett wrote: 'his response to the local landscape metamorphoses constantly…….in his [personal] response [to nature] he pours his feelings for history, legend, religion, socialism and family into his work'.
