Nicki Heenan Cold Wax Workshop 2019

Thursday 14 March and Saturday 16 March 10am - 4pm

Cost £80 - please contact the gallery to book your place asap.

In this 1 day course we will be looking at the basic building blocks to using oil and cold wax. Cold wax is a versatile medium and can be used to modify paint to give body, texture and translucency. It is helpful if you bring some work where you have tried using it or a painting where you think wax would help as this may be a way forward for you to include cold wax into your practice. Learning techniques is only part of what we will be exploring, as it is the practical application of these tools that will build your paintings and create new and exciting surfaces. So, technique - exploration - application are the core processes which we will cover.

There are different ways of approaching 'where to start' with cold wax. I am a landscape painter so I probably use it in a more figurative way than most people, but finding your own rhythm and motif is a big part of any painter's journey and there are so many path's - many of them cross over, but authenticity is what will allow your voice to grow.

I will be doing several demos on the different technique's and then focussing on your own individual enquiry and helping you to incorporate these techniques into your work. There will be some group exercises where we will be able to see each other’s approaches to the same questions. Please don’t worry as to what level you are as a painter as the more you allow yourself the freedom of exploring the wider your bandwidth of expression will become.

Please bring the following materials:

-          oil paint

-          oil bars if you have them

-          solvent -  (Zest It)

-          protective gloves

-          palette for mixing paint - cardboard pieces works for this

-          a few brushes - fan brush is useful and a broad brush

-          1 roll greaseproof paper

-          baby wipes

-          craft knife, scissors

-          palette knife - broad is useful (rather than pointy).

-          cardboard pieces roughly A3 size for transporting wet work

-          Arches Oil paper or suitable paper for oil painting (you can prime paper for this if you can’t get this).

I am providing the cold wax and dry pigments for this course

I am really looking forward to working with you and any questions prior you can message me via my website www.nickiheenan.com
