Philippa Mitchell

Philippa is a painter in oils and in watercolours with a new studio in Hook, near Haverfordwest. Plein-air sketching in watercolour as well as taking photographs, enables her to record the moments of inspiration found whilst walking and enjoying the natural world. Landscapes, especially coastal, feature often, with strong sunlight and wildlife (in particular birds) are favourite subjects.  Paintings might include a flock of geese; a path along the coast; a view of a harbour, woodland or a garden full of butterflies and flowers.

Philippa’s earlier career, for ten years, was as a textile designer including her first job with Laura Ashley in Carno, Powys. She moved from Wales to Gloucestershire, then Norfolk and Scotland, with her bird ecologist husband and family but has recently returned to Wales. A life spent sketching, drawing and painting as a way of expression, and recording a sense of discovery and awe, developed into painting as a full-time artist from 2016.

Awarded a Creative Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage project to study perceptions of wild geese in 2014, allowed her to work with her husband on a science + art project. Philippa has taken part in John Busby Seabird Drawing Course in Scotland 2022 and 2023, and has exhibited successfully in open studios, with a local art collective in Fife and at Pittenweem Art Festival for the last 7 years. Her work has been sold to collectors in the USA, Ireland, Denmark and all over the UK. Three of Philippa’s paintings have been exhibited with Society of Wildlife Artists in The Mall Galleries, London. She has taken part in group and solo exhibitions around Scotland, and undertaken several residences including at the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and Cambo Gardens Trust, Kingsbarns. Philippa was recently the Artist in Residence for the Fife Coastal Path with a resulting book published and available from the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust website.
